Volkswagen Golf GTD revealed ahead of Geneva debut

Volkswagen Golf GTD

Fancy another round of golf? Set to share Geneva floor space with the recently-announced Volkswagen e-Golf is the Volkswagen Golf GTD. Think of it as a Golf GTI with low diesel running costs. It’ll wear an entry-level price tag of €29,350 (RM120,300) when it’s launched in Europe in June.

The Mk7 Golf diesel range-topper is powered by a 2.0 litre common rail turbodiesel unit that pushes out 184 PS and 380 Nm of torque between 1,750 and 3,250 rpm. The century sprint is accomplished in 7.5 seconds, while top speed is 227 km/h.

Fuel economy/CO2 emissions are quoted as follows – six-speed manual: 4.2 litres per 100 km/109 grams per km, six-speed DSG: 4.7 litres per 100 km/119 grams per km (three-door) or 122 grams per km (five-door). Altogether, the new model is faster, lighter, more powerful and more fuel-efficient than the previous GTD.

Volkswagen Golf GTD

The Volkswagen Golf GTD comes with smoked LED rear lights with LED licence plate illumination, along with chrome dual tailpipes, 17-inch alloys with 225/45 tyres, side skirts, a rear diffuser, sports suspension and a roof spoiler.

The tartan sports seats, black headlining, sports steering wheel and stainless steel pedals will be familiar from the GTI. There’s also a GTD-specific gear lever, trim strips and instrument cluster. Other features include progressive steering, white ambience lighting, Climatronic, front and rear parking sensors and a winter pack.

As long as it is significantly cheaper than the BMW 320d, then I would readily consider it. Nearly went for the BMW offering but the missus made a relevant point in saying that its not worth buying a fuel saving (powerful) car when it costs so much.

A lot of people can afford it, just that is it worth to pay for ghost taxes? If the majority not willing to pay for thieves taxes, then we may get a change soon.

Once our diesel is Euro 4 and above then this gem would be worth buying. At the moment I doubt vw would bring it here. I think our diesel is a euro2 rating. Mexico is ahead of us in terms of diesel quality.
